Meanwhile, the first fully Bitcoin-denominated life insurance company, has closed a $37.5 million funding round led by Bain Capital Crypto. The raise brings the Bermuda-based insurer's total capital to over $180 million and signals growing demand for regulated Bitcoin wealth transfer solutions among high-net-worth individuals globally.
International Expansion Drives Growth
The funding follows strong adoption of Meanwhile's products outside the United States, particularly across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The company has onboarded 15 brokers serving wealthy families since launching its BTC Life 1-Pay product in early 2025, including partnerships with Lioner and Apeiron Group—firms specializing in family office and high-net-worth insurance services.
Co-founder and CEO Zac Townsend noted that brokers approached Meanwhile after clients repeatedly requested regulated options for Bitcoin estate planning. The single-premium whole life policy allows clients to pay one Bitcoin premium and receive a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin. After the first year, policyholders can borrow up to 90% of the policy's value without repayment schedules or margin calls.
Meanwhile's underwriting income has already exceeded its 2025 total and is projected to more than double in 2026, though the company has not disclosed specific figures.
Regulatory Framework and Infrastructure
Meanwhile operates under a Class IILT license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority, granted in July 2024 after a two-year regulatory sandbox period. The company maintains its entire balance sheet, reserves, and audited financial statements in Bitcoin, with policyholder assets held through regulated institutional custodians.
The investors in this round include Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also backs the company.
Implications for Web3 Professionals
Meanwhile's growth illustrates the maturation of Bitcoin financial services infrastructure and creates opportunities for professionals with expertise in regulatory compliance, insurance technology, and digital asset custody. As institutional adoption of Bitcoin wealth management tools accelerates, demand for specialists who understand both traditional finance and blockchain technology will likely increase across insurance, legal, and fintech sectors.
