A Bitcoin metaprotocol built atop the Runes framework accounted for the majority of Bitcoin transactions during a three-month period, according to data published by SUBFROST, the protocol's maintainer. The figures reveal a thriving Asia-Pacific developer and user ecosystem that has largely operated outside Western blockchain industry awareness.
Transaction Dominance and Technical Architecture
Between June 23 and September 2025, Alkanes transactions represented 61.1% of all Bitcoin transactions, covering approximately 59.9 million transactions across blocks 954,917 through 967,918. The protocol consumed 40.3% of block space by weight and generated 13.4% of transaction-fee revenue during this window.
SUBFROST maintains Alkanes under co-founder Gabe Lee and original protocol author RWP IV. The protocol operates as a metaprotocol layer that builds on Runes without modifying Bitcoin consensus rules or running as a sidechain. Contract code deploys as WebAssembly in witness data, with users submitting function calls inside Runes-format runestones that a separate indexer called Metashrew executes.
The company publishes daily transaction data under an MIT license, with live metrics available on GitHub and at subfrost.io/metrics.
Regional Market Dynamics and Industry Implications
The Alkanes user base concentrates almost entirely in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly among Chinese-speaking users. SUBFROST ships complete Chinese documentation, operates Chinese-language Telegram channels, and maintains a Chinese metrics page. The company has held workshops in China and participated in Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong.
Major Western blockchain analytics providers initially misattributed this activity. CryptoQuant, Glassnode, and other data services reported the transaction surge as general Runes or Ordinals activity in June, without identifying Alkanes specifically. Independent analyst Renaud Cuny later calculated that Alkanes protostones represented 91% of OP_RETURN outputs over a 60-day period.
Workforce Considerations
For blockchain professionals, this data highlights significant geographic disparities in protocol awareness and market intelligence. Companies building Bitcoin layer-2 solutions, analytics platforms, or wallet infrastructure may need APAC-focused talent with Chinese language capabilities to accurately track and serve these emerging markets. The protocol launched in January 2025 and transitioned from original developer Oyl Corp. to SUBFROST maintenance in early 2026, creating potential opportunities for developers familiar with WebAssembly and Bitcoin metaprotocol architecture.
