The report, authored by analyst Jasper De Maere, suggests mining companies must evolve beyond traditional block reward dependency to survive the current cycle.
Revenue Model Under Pressure
The mathematics behind mining profitability have shifted dramatically. Bitcoin returned only 1.15x on a rolling four-year basis in the current epoch, far below the 10x–20x multiples that characterized earlier cycles. This represents a structural change rather than a temporary downturn, with direct implications for mining company viability and employment.
Gross margins peaked around 30% this cycle—a figure that previously marked bear market bottoms, not operational peaks. Earlier epochs saw sustained margins of 70–80%, providing substantial buffer for staffing, expansion, and R&D investment. Transaction fees, despite periodic spikes, contribute marginally to overall revenue and fail to provide the safety net the industry once anticipated.
For mining professionals, this compression means companies can no longer rely on price appreciation to cover operational inefficiencies or justify aggressive hiring.
Diverging Paths for Mining Operations
Wintermute identifies two viable adaptation strategies, each with distinct workforce implications:
High-performance computing pivots offer the clearest path for well-capitalized operators. Mining sites previously valued at $1–7 per watt have traded near $18 per watt after repositioning for AI workloads, driven by partnerships like Core Scientific's deals with major tech firms. However, this transition requires different skill sets—data center operations, enterprise sales, and cloud infrastructure expertise—rather than traditional mining engineering roles.
Active treasury management presents an alternative for operators lacking the infrastructure for HPC conversion. Miners collectively hold approximately 1% of all Bitcoin, which Wintermute argues should function as a working asset through derivatives strategies and on-chain lending rather than remaining idle.
