Boston-based Foundation has closed a $6.4 million funding round led by Fulgur Ventures, bringing total capital raised to $16.5 million. The investment supports the company's expansion beyond Bitcoin self-custody into identity management and AI agent authorization systems, alongside the launch of its Passport Prime hardware device.
Addressing Security in the AI Agent Era
Passport Prime represents Foundation's entry into what the company terms "Human Authority Hardware"—devices designed to require direct human approval for critical digital actions through isolated, secure hardware. The device began shipping to pre-order customers in March 2026 and is now available for $349 through Foundation's website.
The timing reflects growing concerns within the blockchain and enterprise sectors about security vulnerabilities as AI agents gain capabilities to execute tasks across financial accounts, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise systems. Foundation CEO Zach Herbert argues that traditional approval methods like browser prompts or mobile notifications cannot serve as reliable checkpoints when autonomous software operates within the same environment.
Passport Prime consolidates multiple security functions: Bitcoin hardware wallet, FIDO authentication keys, two-factor authentication storage, secrets vault, and 50GB of encrypted storage. The device runs KeyOS, a Rust-based microkernel operating system Foundation developed over three years, which is now open source.
Platform Opens Opportunities for Developers
Foundation is expanding KeyOS into a developer platform, offering a software development kit, documentation, command-line tools, and a simulator for testing applications. This creates potential opportunities for security-focused developers working on Bitcoin transaction policies, identity verification tools, enterprise signing systems, and AI agent approval workflows.
The company plans to launch a KeyOS app store by Q2's end, establishing a distribution channel for security applications. Cake Wallet, serving over one million users, has become the first external partner building on KeyOS, developing a cold storage application for its user base.
For blockchain professionals, Foundation's platform represents a convergence of hardware security, identity management, and AI authorization—skills increasingly relevant as organizations implement autonomous agent systems. The company expects additional integrations across financial services, identity infrastructure, and AI workflows throughout 2026, potentially expanding employment opportunities in hardware security development and enterprise blockchain solutions.
