Strategic Shift from Mining to AI Infrastructure
The City of Sherbrooke has approved Keel's agreement with Hydro-Sherbrooke to transfer and operate 96 MW of existing electrical capacity to a single campus location. The company will recategorize the power allocation from Bitcoin mining to high-performance computing and AI, reflecting investor preference for compute infrastructure over cryptocurrency mining operations.
Keel is consolidating existing operations rather than requesting additional power from the grid, aligning with Quebec's energy priorities while preserving current electrical infrastructure. The approach allows the company to leverage previously built capacity and existing utility relationships.
Two regulatory hurdles remain before the project advances. Quebec's Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy must approve the capacity transfer, while the land purchase for the campus site—located approximately 100 miles east of Montreal—requires standard feasibility analysis and municipal sign-offs. Keel expects to close the land transaction in Q1 2027.
