Tokyo-listed investment firm Metaplanet has closed a $255 million equity placement with institutional investors, marking a significant expansion of its corporate Bitcoin treasury strategy. The financing includes warrant instruments that could bring total capital raised to approximately $531 million if fully exercised by March 2028.
Aggressive Expansion Plans
Metaplanet currently holds 35,102 BTC, valued at roughly $2.6 billion at current market prices. The company has set ambitious accumulation targets: 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026 and 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. These holdings would position the firm among the largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries globally, though still behind industry leaders like Strategy and MARA Holdings.
The capital raise consists of new shares priced at 380 yen ($2.39) each, plus fixed-strike warrants exercisable at 410 yen ($2.57) per share. According to CEO Simon Gerovich, the company plans to allocate approximately $357 million toward Bitcoin purchases between April 2026 and March 2028.
The firm has also introduced 100 million "MS Warrants" tied to its modified net asset value (mNAV), a metric comparing market capitalization against Bitcoin holdings. This structure aims to ensure that any new equity issuance increases per-share Bitcoin holdings, addressing dilution concerns among shareholders.
Capital Allocation and Diversification
Not all proceeds will fund Bitcoin acquisitions. Metaplanet will allocate approximately $132 million to repay borrowings under its existing credit facility and $39.5 million toward its Bitcoin income generation business, including margin collateral for options underwriting.
The company maintains a $500 million credit facility backed by Bitcoin collateral, with roughly $280 million currently drawn. Management has committed to keeping borrowings below 10% of Bitcoin holdings' net asset value to preserve financial flexibility.
Implications for Web3 Professionals
Metaplanet's expansion beyond passive Bitcoin holding signals growing opportunities in the corporate treasury space. Last week, the company announced two new subsidiaries—Metaplanet Ventures and Metaplanet Asset Management—and plans to invest approximately $25 million in Japanese startups building Bitcoin financial infrastructure, including lending, custody, derivatives, and compliance tools.
These developments suggest increasing demand for professionals with expertise in Bitcoin treasury management, derivatives trading, regulatory compliance, and blockchain infrastructure development within traditional corporate structures.
