Morgan Stanley Plans Native Crypto Infrastructure as Institutional Demand Grows

Morgan Stanley is developing native cryptocurrency custody and exchange infrastructure as part of a broader digital asset expansion that could create new opportunities for blockchain professionals in traditional finance. Amy Oldenburg, the firm's Head of Digital Asset Strategy, outlined the roadmap during a discussion at Strategy World last week.

Phased Rollout of Crypto Services

The bank is taking a measured approach to building its digital asset capabilities. Morgan Stanley will initially enable spot cryptocurrency trading on its E*Trade platform through a third-party partnership, following its earlier moves into Bitcoin ETF products. The firm announced plans last year to offer direct Bitcoin trading access to E*Trade clients.

Within the next 12 months, Morgan Stanley intends to launch a fully integrated custody and exchange platform built in-house. Oldenburg emphasized that developing proprietary technology is necessary to meet institutional standards and client expectations around the Morgan Stanley brand.

The planned custody solution would provide legal custody of digital assets under Morgan Stanley's oversight, though the firm acknowledges that some clients, particularly Bitcoin holders, will prefer self-custody options. Beyond custody and trading, the bank is exploring yield generation and lending products backed by crypto holdings, though no specific timeline has been announced for these services.

Institutional Adoption Driving Infrastructure Needs

Oldenburg's perspective comes from extensive experience in emerging markets, where she led Morgan Stanley's investing business for 13 years. She noted observing early Bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption across 17 of the top 20 global emerging markets during her 26-year tenure at the firm.

With $8 trillion in assets under management, Morgan Stanley has identified significant client crypto holdings currently kept off-platform. Bringing these assets onto the firm's infrastructure represents a substantial business opportunity and reflects broader institutional adoption trends.

The bank is monitoring developments in decentralized finance, particularly lending protocols, as it develops its product roadmap. Oldenburg described yield and lending services as a "natural part" of the firm's evolution in digital assets.

For blockchain professionals, Morgan Stanley's infrastructure buildout signals continued demand for crypto expertise within traditional financial institutions. As major banks develop native solutions rather than relying solely on third-party providers, opportunities in compliance, custody architecture, and institutional-grade exchange development are likely to expand.
