Nakamoto Inc. has introduced an actively managed Bitcoin derivatives program designed to generate income from volatility while managing downside risk, the company announced Friday. The initiative, which became operational in Q1 2026, runs alongside the firm's primary Bitcoin treasury strategy and could signal evolving approaches to corporate crypto asset management across the industry.
Strategic Structure and Execution
The program operates through a separately managed account with Bitwise Asset Management, with custody services handled by Kraken Institutional. Nakamoto uses a portion of its Bitcoin holdings as collateral while retaining full ownership of the underlying assets, which continue counting toward its reported Bitcoin position.
The derivatives strategy consists of two distinct components:
- Income sleeve: Generates premiums by writing covered calls and call spreads against a defined portion of Nakamoto's Bitcoin holdings, capitalizing on situations where implied volatility exceeds realized volatility
- Hedging sleeve: Purchases protective puts and put spreads to limit losses during price declines, with costs potentially offset by income-generating positions
Tyler Evans, chief investment officer of Nakamoto and UTXO Management, characterized Bitcoin's implied volatility as a persistent opportunity for structured value generation. Premiums collected through the program may be received in Bitcoin or U.S. dollars, providing flexibility for funding hedging costs, acquiring additional Bitcoin, or supporting general corporate operations.
Implications for Corporate Treasury Management
The program operates under strict parameters governing notional exposure, approved instruments, counterparty selection, and custody requirements. The company acknowledges that call option positions may cap upside participation in exchange for generating current income—a tradeoff likely to interest finance and treasury professionals evaluating similar strategies.
For web3 professionals and companies holding significant cryptocurrency positions, Nakamoto's approach represents a practical framework for balancing yield generation with risk management. As more publicly traded companies adopt Bitcoin treasury strategies, demand may increase for professionals with expertise in derivatives, options trading, and digital asset risk management. Performance metrics from the program's initial quarter will be disclosed in Nakamoto's forthcoming 10-Q filing.
