Japanese financial conglomerate SBI Holdings has finalized its acquisition of a majority stake in Coinhako, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange, following regulatory approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The deal, completed on July 16, marks a significant expansion of SBI's digital asset operations into Southeast Asia and signals potential workforce growth across the region.
Strategic Regional Expansion
SBI Holdings executed the acquisition through its subsidiary SBI Ventures Asset Pte. Ltd., which invested capital into Coinhako's parent company Holdbuild Pte. Ltd. and purchased shares from existing stakeholders. The transaction converts Coinhako into a consolidated subsidiary of the Japanese firm, which manages over 14 million users and $308 billion in assets under custody.
Coinhako operates under regulatory licenses through two entities: Hako Technology Pte. Ltd., which holds a Major Payment Institution license from MAS, and Alpha Hako Ltd., registered with the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission. The platform has spent a decade building its presence across Southeast Asia, positioning itself in what SBI considers a strategically important market for digital asset services.
Implications for Digital Asset Services
The acquisition advances SBI's broader strategy to create a global digital asset corridor connecting exchanges worldwide. Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao emphasized Singapore's advanced regulatory environment as a key factor in the decision, noting the jurisdiction provides a foundation for cross-border digital asset operations.
SBI plans to integrate Coinhako's regional customer base and operational infrastructure with its own technology stack and financial services. This includes expanding services related to JPYSC, SBI's yen-denominated stablecoin, alongside developing tokenization capabilities and on-chain finance solutions.
The move follows aggressive expansion by SBI in the crypto sector. Recent activities include leading EDX Markets' $76 million Series C funding, backing risk management platform Gauntlet, partnering with the Solana Foundation on Japan-based on-chain markets, and agreeing to acquire Tokyo-based Bitbank for approximately $289 million.
For blockchain professionals, this consolidation trend suggests growing employment opportunities in regulated crypto platforms, particularly roles focused on compliance, regional operations, and cross-border payment infrastructure across Asian markets. The integration of Coinhako's operations with SBI's broader ecosystem will likely require expertise in stablecoin infrastructure, tokenization, and regulatory frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.
