Standard Chartered has become the first global systemically important bank to offer institutional bitcoin spot trading in the United Arab Emirates, marking a significant milestone for the region's digital asset infrastructure. The announcement, made Thursday, expands the bank's crypto services following the 2024 launch of digital asset custody operations in the UAE.
Institutional Infrastructure Expands in Middle East
The new trading service is available exclusively to eligible institutional clients in the UAE, building on the country's regulatory framework for digital assets. Rola Abu Manneh, CEO for UAE, Middle East and Pakistan at Standard Chartered, emphasized that the region has established clear regulations supporting institutional participation and innovation.
The bank integrates execution capabilities with secure custody, governance, and global banking connectivity, providing institutional clients with comprehensive access to digital asset markets. This approach reflects growing demand from institutional investors for regulated, bank-grade cryptocurrency services.
Standard Chartered previously established a crypto trading desk in London during 2025, positioning itself among the first major global banks to enter spot cryptocurrency trading. The bank integrated this operation into its foreign exchange trading division and launched Libeara, a blockchain unit focused on tokenizing traditional assets.
Implications for Web3 Workforce
The expansion of institutional crypto services by major financial institutions continues to reshape hiring dynamics in the blockchain industry. As traditional banks build out digital asset capabilities, demand grows for professionals who bridge conventional finance and crypto expertise—including compliance specialists familiar with regional regulations, custody solutions architects, and institutional trading desk operators.
The UAE's regulatory clarity has positioned the region as an attractive market for crypto talent, with major financial institutions requiring professionals who understand both traditional banking infrastructure and blockchain technology. Standard Chartered's move follows its bullish outlook on bitcoin, with the bank's Global Head of Digital Assets Research, Geoffrey Kendrick, forecasting potential price movements toward previous all-time highs.
For professionals in the crypto sector, the institutionalization of digital asset services by globally significant banks signals continued growth in regulated crypto career opportunities, particularly in jurisdictions with established regulatory frameworks like the UAE.
