Strategy CEO Phong Le defended the company's Bitcoin-focused business model this week as the Nasdaq-listed firm navigates challenging market conditions that have impacted both its stock price and the broader crypto industry workforce.
Treasury Management Under Pressure
The company recently sold 1,638 BTC for approximately $104.7 million and repurchased 912,143 shares of its preferred stock (STRC) for $81.2 million. This marks the first Bitcoin sale after six consecutive weeks without purchases—a notable shift from the company's aggressive accumulation strategy that characterized much of 2024.
Strategy's stock has declined nearly 40% year-to-date, falling roughly 80% from its November 2024 peak of $474 per share. Despite holding 842,138 Bitcoin worth approximately $53.8 billion, the company reported an $8.22 billion loss for Q2 2026, largely driven by paper losses on its Bitcoin holdings.
Speaking on CNBC, Le emphasized the company's long-term approach: "We actively manage our capital structure, we rotate into Bitcoin, we sell Bitcoin when we need to, and we'll continue to do so—and we'll get through this bear market."
Implications for the Crypto Treasury Sector
Strategy pioneered the Bitcoin treasury company model in August 2020, positioning itself as an alternative for investors seeking Bitcoin exposure through traditional equity markets. The company maintains it remains the largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally.
Le compared the firm's role to "the J.P. Morgan of the crypto economy," arguing that selling a small fraction of holdings matters less than the overall strategy of increasing Bitcoin per share for shareholders.
The company's challenges reflect broader pressures facing crypto-focused public companies and their employees. Market downturns typically impact hiring and compensation across the blockchain sector, particularly at firms with significant digital asset exposure.
For professionals in corporate treasury, financial planning, and executive roles within crypto companies, Strategy's approach offers a case study in navigating volatile market conditions while maintaining a long-term thesis. The company's ability to weather this downturn may influence how other public companies structure their digital asset strategies and related team-building efforts.
