Tokyo-listed bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet is expanding beyond asset accumulation, launching two new subsidiaries that signal growing employment opportunities in bitcoin financial services across Asia and the United States. The company's board approved the creation of Metaplanet Ventures and Metaplanet Asset Management, marking a strategic shift that could generate new positions for web3 professionals in venture capital, asset management, and blockchain infrastructure development.
Venture Fund Targets Bitcoin Infrastructure Builders
Metaplanet Ventures will operate as the firm's VC arm with approximately ¥4 billion ($25 million) earmarked for deployment over the coming years. The fund will focus on companies building bitcoin financial infrastructure in Japan, including platforms for lending, payments, custody, derivatives, stablecoins, and compliance solutions.
The venture unit plans to operate three distinct programs:
- Direct investments in early-stage and growth-stage startups
- An incubator program supporting founders developing bitcoin infrastructure
- Grants for open-source developers, researchers, and educators
CEO Simon Gerovich emphasized that while Japan maintains robust digital asset regulations, the country requires deeper talent pools and service providers. The venture arm's initial investment commits ¥400 million ($2.5 million) to JPYC Inc., a Japanese yen-denominated stablecoin issuer, as part of its Series B funding round.
Miami-Based Asset Management Unit Bridges Markets
Metaplanet Asset Management will operate from Miami, focusing on digital credit products and bitcoin capital markets. The subsidiary will develop bitcoin yield instruments, fixed-income structures, and actively managed strategies across multiple asset classes. This geographic expansion creates opportunities for asset management professionals in both Asian and Western markets.
The company positions this unit as a bridge between Asian and Western capital markets, structuring regulated bitcoin investment products and providing advisory services around digital asset capital formation.
Implications for Web3 Professionals
Metaplanet currently holds approximately 35,102 BTC (roughly $2.4 billion), representing one of Asia's largest corporate bitcoin treasuries. While the company reported a ¥95 billion ($598 million) net loss for 2025 due to unrealized bitcoin valuation changes, its expansion into venture capital and asset management suggests long-term commitment to building institutional infrastructure around digital assets. For blockchain professionals, these developments indicate growing demand for expertise in regulatory compliance, financial product development, and cross-border digital asset services within established corporate structures.
