Japan's Metaplanet Explores Bitcoin-Backed Credit Platform, Signaling Workforce Expansion

Japan's largest corporate bitcoin holder is moving beyond treasury management into financial infrastructure development. Metaplanet announced Friday it will partner with three firms to explore tokenized credit products backed by bitcoin, a shift that could create new roles at the intersection of traditional finance and blockchain technology.

Building a Financial Infrastructure Stack

The joint study brings together Metaplanet, yen stablecoin issuer JPYC, regulated security token platform Progmat, and Siiibo Securities—the licensed brokerage Metaplanet acquired last month for 2.1 billion yen ($13 million). Siiibo will rebrand as Metaplanet Securities on July 13.

The four companies will investigate whether bitcoin can collateralize credit instruments that pay daily interest. The initiative targets a product gap in Japan's debt market, where mid-sized and growth companies face high costs and operational barriers to issuing bonds. The proposed system would enable 24/7 trading and settlement through blockchain infrastructure, handling interest calculations and redemptions through smart contracts.

Each partner contributes specific expertise: Metaplanet and its securities arm will design and distribute bitcoin-backed credit products, JPYC will test yen-pegged stablecoin settlement, and Progmat will provide the regulated tokenization layer for tracking ownership and transfers.

Workforce Implications for Web3 Professionals

This development aligns with Metaplanet's Project Nova strategy to build a bitcoin-centric financial platform in Japan. The company's acquisition of Siiibo Securities brought a Type I Financial Instruments Business Operator registration, the license required to structure and sell financial products to Japanese retail investors.

Siiibo operates an online platform for private-placement corporate bonds and has supported over 40 issuers across more than 100 offerings since its 2019 founding. The platform serves approximately 250,000 investors.

The project remains in early stages. Metaplanet stated that nothing has been determined regarding issuance timing, terms, yield, or product details. The companies will conduct proof-of-concept work to address product design challenges before any commercial launch.

For blockchain professionals, this initiative represents a broader trend of traditional financial institutions integrating digital assets into core operations. Companies pursuing regulated financial products backed by crypto assets will need professionals with expertise in compliance, tokenization infrastructure, stablecoin systems, and traditional securities operations. Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC, currently valued at approximately $2.47 billion, positioning it as the third-largest public corporate bitcoin holder globally.
